Academic Year / Semester Abroad Programs

Study Abroad Italy

Study abroad for a year or a semester at the oldest and most prestigious U.S. art school in Florence, Italy. We offer a wide range of unique and challenging courses in studio arts, design, conservation, art history, and Italian culture and language.

Hands-on Learning in the Birthplace of the Renaissance

Our contemporary and cross-disciplinary arts programs immerse you in the vibrant and thriving community of Florence, with rich experiences and a level of direct engagement few study abroad programs can offer.

As part of numerous academic field trips offered each term, you’ll get to visit museums and historic sites in Florence, as well as artists’ and designers’ studios, private collections, galleries, art fairs, and theaters. Trips to other famous Italian cities offer more exciting learning opportunities and new adventures abroad.

You’ll also have extensive access to modern and historic art collections, research libraries, and contemporary art museums. Advanced students may be eligible to take a directed independent study or traineeship in a design firm, museum, or gallery.

There are many opportunities to exhibit your own artwork in SACI’s two galleries, and the Academic Semester Abroad culminates in a major end-of-semester student exhibition which also gives you the chance to display your work to the public in Florence.

Community Involvement

Our study abroad programs emphasize connection to art and community, so you’ll find many ways to get involved in Florence through your studies. As part of class work, SACI students often create artwork for local hospitals and human rights organizations, and restore major art treasures that are a part of Italy’s cultural heritage. Outside of class, student volunteers can teach English at elementary schools, serve as English-language museum guides, and assist at human rights agencies. Through these opportunities you’ll not only get to give back, you’ll also enrich your own learning experience and make lifelong connections.

The Study Abroad Experience at SACI

At SACI, you’ll work alongside some of the top art instructors in Europe. Our faculty members are passionate about what they do, and dedicated to helping you discover your passion and realize your own goals as an artist. You’ll also work with students from all over the world. Not only will this help to open up new ideas in your work, it can be an invaluable learning experience in its own right, offering a diversity of perspectives and collaborative experience that will enrich your life and career.

SACI offers a wide range of unique courses in studio arts, design, conservation, art history, and Italian culture and language that allow you to explore different fields and ways of working. As an Academic Year or Semester Abroad student, you can enroll in five classes (for a total of 15 credits) in both fall and spring, earning credits toward your college or university in the United States.
